How to Prepare Your Appliances for Texas Summer Heat

Texas summers put extra strain on your appliances, especially refrigerators and freezers working overtime to fight the heat. Here is how to prepare your appliances before temperatures climb.

Refrigerator and freezer prep

1

Clean the condenser coils

Dust and pet hair make your compressor work harder, which is especially risky during peak summer heat.

2

Check the door seal

A worn seal lets warm, humid Texas air inside, forcing the compressor to run constantly.

3

Give your fridge breathing room

Make sure at least a few inches of clearance exist around the back and sides for proper airflow.

4

Test your ice maker

Summer means more ice use. Confirm production is normal before you need it for a gathering.

Garage refrigerators and freezers

If you keep a spare fridge or freezer in the garage, Texas heat can push ambient temperatures well above what these units are designed to handle. Many standard refrigerators struggle to cool properly when the surrounding air is over 100°F. Consider a garage-ready model if this is a recurring issue, or add ventilation to the space.

Energy saving tip: Keep your fridge and freezer reasonably full. A full freezer actually holds cold temperatures more efficiently than an empty one, reducing how hard the compressor works.

Outdoor kitchen appliances

  • Check outdoor refrigerator door seals, which wear faster in direct sun
  • Clean grill burners before peak grilling season begins
  • Inspect gas connections for any wear from heat exposure
  • Test igniters before you need them for a summer cookout

Heat and food safety: If your refrigerator struggles to keep up during a heat wave, check the internal temperature with a thermometer. It should stay at or below 40°F to keep food safe.

When to call for a summer tune-up

Late spring is the best time to schedule a maintenance visit, before the hottest months arrive. This gives us time to catch small issues, like a struggling fan motor, before they turn into a mid-summer breakdown.

Standard refrigerators are not designed to cool properly when surrounding air exceeds about 100°F, which is common in Texas garages during summer.
